The effort to remove California Governor Gavin Newsom from office appears to have gained momentum, topping more than 1 million signatures.

The effort still has two months left to collect the remaining 500,000 signatures required to trigger a gubernatorial election which could result in Newsom losing the Governor’s seat.

The people are being heard loud and clear, and it is not a matter of IF we are going to reach our goal necessary that will trigger a recall election of Newsom, it is just when we cross the finish line,” the organizer, Orrin Heatlie, said in a statement.

The petition website reads:

Governor Gavin Newsom
Has Failed Californians

Unaffordable housing. Record homelessness. Rising crime. Failing schools. Independent contractors thrown out of work. Exploding pension debt. And now, a locked down population while the prisons are emptied. Hold Gavin Newsom accountable. Gavin Newsom must go.

Some California residents say they have grown weary of strict measures that Newsom has issued to combat surging coronavirus cases in the state. The governor has been also met with contempt after getting caught violating restrictions he established.

The campaign has until March to garner the rest of the signatures.
