Coronavirus vaccines will be rolling out next week in the United Kingdom after the country becomes the first to approve an immunization drug to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

Pfizer’s vaccine was approved for emergency use on Wednesday by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority, or MHRA. The MHRA was given power to approve the vaccine by the government under special regulations.

Studies show that the Pfizer vaccine has up to a 95% efficacy rate against COVID-19 infection.

Pfizer has reported that the U.K. has purchased 40 million doses of the vaccine.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed the announcement on Twitter saying “It’s the protection of vaccines that will ultimately allow us to reclaim our lives and get the economy moving again.”

According to the U.K.’s Secretary of State for Health & Social Care Matt Hancock, the National Health Service will begin vaccinations as early as next week.
