Information was stolen from the U.S. Treasury Department in a foreign government backed cyberattack according to Reuters.
“The United States government is aware of these reports, and we are taking all necessary steps to identify and remedy any possible issues related to this situation,” said National Security Council spokesman John Ullyot.
It was also reported that the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, responsible for deciding internet and telecommunications policy, was also part of the breach.
A National Security Council meeting was held at the White House on Saturday.
The hackers had reportedly exploited Microsoft’s Office 365 software to gain access to the data. Staff emails at the agencies have been monitored for months, sources said.
The full scope of the hack is unclear. Members of the U.S. intelligence community have raised concerns that the same hacker group also infiltrated other government agencies, according to the Reuters report.
The Guardian reported that the investigation involves multiple federal agencies including the FBI.
