President Donald Trump signed a one-week budget stopgap that the Senate approved on Friday.

Trump signed it Friday just hours ahead of the midnight deadline. The temporary move avoids a government shutdown giving lawmakers additional time to continue negotiations over the budget.

The resolution extends current funding for all federal agencies until December 18 while providing just one week for the senate to agree on a Covid-19 relief package which has been debated since October.

A $908 billion stimulus plan has been central to the debate. The plan would include additional unemployment aid, assistance to state and local governments, as well as protections for businesses.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is seeking to include more liability protections for businesses vulnerable to coronavirus-linked lawsuits.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has signaled that she is prepared to keep lawmakers in Washington until a stimulus deal is reached.
