Lindsay Graham Says Social Media Companies Will Destroy Conservatism

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham said that “social media companies and mail-in voting will destroy conservatism if we don’t push back.”
Graham on Tuesday introduced legislation that will repeal a broad liability shield that has been protecting internet technology companies.
Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act is a decades old law that has faced scrutiny by members of both political parties, but most notably conservatives. President Donald Trump has threatened to veto the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) if it doesn’t include provisions for repealing Section 230.
Graham’s bill would effectively phase out Section 230 by January 1, 2023, providing Congress two years to replace it with a better alternative.
Graham said in a statement: “My legislation will repeal Section 230 on January 1, 2023, unless Congress acts sooner. Congress will have two years to find an acceptable alternative or allow the legal liability protections to go away.” “I’m hopeful that there will be bipartisan support for this approach.”
Social media providers and search engines have been accused of selectively censoring and omitting content for political purposes, a move that many consider to be censorship without consequence. Many lawmakers have directly accused the companies of partisan censorship.
Public opposition of Section 230 has dramatically increased this year as social media users have experienced a marked increase in content moderation by big-tech companies such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google.
“The time has come for these largely unregulated Big Tech giants to either be broken up, regulated, or subject to litigation for their actions,” Graham said. “It’s time we put the Section 230 protections these companies enjoy on the clock.”
“These companies have an enormous impact on the day-to-day lives of the American people and enjoy protections other industries do not have,” he added. “Both Democrats and Republicans agree: the time has come for Section 230 to be reformed or eliminated.”
Speaking on Fox’s Sean Hannity show on Monday, Graham said: “There’s two threats to conservatism: mass mail-in voting unverified and social media companies unregulated, unable to be sued when they take down the content of conservatives.”
“Section 230 allows the big tech companies to take down content and make decisions without being sued, and they’re not regulated. There’s no business that I know of in America that can’t be sued for their actions and not subject to regulation by the government at any level, except big tech,” Graham explained.
“And you and the New York Post and Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham can sue these bastards when they try to censor content,” Graham exclaimed to Hannity.
“They have a political bias,” Graham continued. “They’re protected from lawsuits and they’re not regulated by the government. That needs to come to an end.”
