Germany: Two Killed, 15 injured When Car Hits Pedestrians

At least two have died and 15 others seriously injured after a car drove through a pedestrian zone in the German city of Trier.

The incident happened near the city center of the Western German town on Tuesday, according to Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe.

We have a driver who ran amok in the city. We have two dead that we are certain of and up to 15 injured, some of them with the most severe injuries,” Mr Leibe said at a news conference.

I just walked through the city center and it was just horrible. There is a trainer lying on the ground, and the girl it belongs to is dead,” Leibe added.

Trier police tweeted that the driver was arrested and the vehicle was impounded, “Officers have arrested the driver of the car, a 51-year-old male, who is from the Trier-Saarburg area. The vehicle has also been secured“.

Local police and rescue crews were on the scene and authorities advised residents to avoid the city center.

Trier is located approximately 120 miles west of Frankfurt, close to the border with Luxembourg.

No details were immediately available on the cause of the crash.
