Congressman-elect Jamaal Bowman of New York said that “our current system of capitalism is slavery by another name.”

The future congressmen won New York’s 16th Congressional District easily after canidate Eliot Engel conceded to him in the Democratic primary.

Bowman, considered a new member of the progressive “Squad,” was endorsed by far-left torchbearers including Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York’s 14th congressional district.

His policies are considered controversial, even for establishment democrats. He is an advocate of the Green New Deal, free college and the cancellation of student debt, Medicare for All, and even a National Truth and Reconciliation Commission that his website states is “to investigate, document, and assess the federal government’s role in America’s history of racism.”

In an interview published in The Root on Monday he said: “Our current system of capitalism is slavery by another name. We’ve moved from physical chattel enslavement and physical racial segregation to a plantation economic system.”

The progressive congressman made his rise earlier this year with support from Black Lives Matter, a political activist group with socialist roots. He is an outspoken proponent of the movement to defund police. Earlier this month, he told Dana Bash of CNN that the movement would be to achieve “a dramatic reduction in the number of police in our poor communities and particularly our poor Black and Brown communities.”
