A vaccine co-developed between Oxford University in the UK and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has shown to be nearly 90% effective. The vaccine also may be a more economically viable option to administer and distribute compared to alternative vaccines.
The vaccine is the third Covid-19 trial to have produced efficacy results. Pfizer and Moderna have announced results earlier this month.
The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine appears to have advantages over its predecessors. It is fridge-stable so that it can be easily transported anywhere in the world. The Moderna vaccine must be kept in freezers while Pfizer’s must be kept so cold that specialized storage and transportation equipment is required.
This new vaccine is more economically viable as well. The dosage cost is less the $4 compared to $20 for the others.
The UK has pre-ordered 100 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. Four million doses have been supplied so far, although the vaccine cannot be used until it becomes licensed.
